Doctor Who: The Sonic Toolbox (tech talk)
A Doctor Who podcast, hosted by Daisy Kaufman and Cheryl Lowe. We focus on Doctor Who from a "how does that work in the Doctor Who universe" science-ish point of view. There's also lots of other Doctor Who discussion, and some rabbit chasing.

Androids have been a staple of science fiction ever since the Golden Age, and Doctor Who has had it's fair share of them. We're discussing some of our favorite TV androids this week, both in Doctor Who and elsewhere.

Quarantine is over and we're all back and healthy. For the most part. We did our best to edit out all the coughing, but we may have missed a couple, sorry. But, we're back, and we're discussing those glass avatars from the Christmas special and looking into the very real possibility of humans being able to do something like this in the not to distant future.

We're talking about the Bootstrap Paradox also known as a Closed Time Loop. A lovely little scientific anomaly that allows science fiction writers to confuse the hell out of their readers and viewers.

Please also excuse our brief audio problem mid-show. This was the best we could fix it (and the reason we're a tad late posting).

Remember Capt. Jack's square gun? Well, the "Architect's" dimensional shift bomb is very similar. We figure out how it works in this episode. Get your math books out, this gets real.

We're discussing those emotion indicator badges from the episode "Smile". We also talk a bit about the eclipse that the US just experienced (some of us experiencing it better than others...Cheryl).

Also, no news. And amazingly very little rabbit chasing.

We haven't been able to clear out all the rabbits from the studio just yet. But we're pressing on and discussing some of the new creatures and species that we've been introduced to during this last series. Season. Series/season. Serison. You know what we mean.

Episode 224: Instant People Machine

We're working out how The Doctor's daughter was cloned, or replicated is a better word. We're also talking about yarn shops and celebrity deaths. Grant makes an appearance. And we have a review of The Doctor's Daughter from Sharon Rose!

Episode 221: Cheryl and the Androids

Though we wind up talking more about the psychology of androids than their workings, it seems Cheryl has completely missed all the android SF stories. Let the education begin!

And Gally news.

Episode 217: It's Just A Jump To The Left

Hyperspace is only a theory and a Science Fiction concept. But for us it's as real as last week's Doctor Who episode. And the subject of this week's show.

We've also got a tiny bit of Gally news. And the usual rabbit chasing.

(Sorry we're late posting this. Technical issues, natch.)

Episode 215: Gunsliinger Borg

Kahler-Tek, known now as "The Gunslinger", kind of looks like a Borg. It got us thinking that perhaps his technology was similar enough to use as a jumping off place for this discussion. And, amazingly enough, for the most part the rabbits seem to have agreed!

We've got a little bit of news. A spoiler-free review of Star Trek Beyond. Also, for you Sherlock fans, the three words for Series 4.

Episode 211: Black Rabbit Holes

Black holes appear in lots of TV shows and movies. Doctor Who being no exception. Here in the Toolbox, we like black holes a lot more than we do those last two episodes we reviewed. And we want to impart our fascination with this cosmic phenomenon to you. As it turns out, we also want to take you on a merry rabbit chase.

We also have news. OMG! News in the summer time? Yes! News!

For more real info on black holes, Google "black hole facts" for a pages and pages of quick info lists.

Episode 208: The Great Polymer Link

The Nestene Consciousness is the big, plastic baddie from the Third and Ninth Doctor's eras. You know, the ones that turned Rory into the plastic Centurion.  We're talking about who they are and how they exist. We're also, apparently, talking about everything else that comes to mind as well.

We've also got some news, some not news and some breaking news.

Episode 206: Give Us A Moment

The Moment. A self aware weapon of mass destruction. Just how does that work? I fact, there's a whole bunch of questions about it's existence. Today, we try to figure it all out.

Also, a little linguistic history lesson. And a whole lot of rampant rabbits.

(Thanks for your patience with us getting this posted. Life (and work) happens sometimes.)

Episode 199: Little Tech Rabbits

There was some new technology in Series 9. The Sonic Sunglasses and the Confession Disk were both introduced. There were also some story specific tech. We try to discuss all of this, but the rabbits keep jumping in and out. Nonetheless, we still figure out some stuff that we didn't think we knew anything about. How d'ya like that!

Episode 185: General Oodness or Do Oodkind Have Wives?

More Ood.  Odd Ood.  And rabbits.  Odd rabbits.  Ood rabbits?  No, that would be too weird.  We do seem to get a bit far flung this episode, however.  But when we come back around, we're all Ood science and speculation.  So, watch out!

Episode 183: The Mechanics of Rabbits

Here we attempt to explain and explore how time travel machines work.  Unfortuantely, the rabbits are driving Wranglers and keep running all over our conversations.  But we manage to get thru a small bit of news and feed back, so all is not lost. Actually, it's found!  So are TARDISs, Leviathans, vortex manipulaters, Omnis and time corridors.

Episode 174: Vortex Manipulating Rabbits

So, the first half of the show got taken over by rabbits.  We're not sure how it happened, maybe somebody left the door to the hutch unlocked, but we had to do an awful lot of chasing them down.  The second half of the show is all about time travel by means other than the TARDIS.  We really get in depth into how things work and the difference between time travel in the TARDIS and time travel via Vortex Manipulator.

Episode 169: Tater Time Tots

To loom or not to loom, that is the question. Whether tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of Rasalon or the piques of Pythia. We are pondering the method by which Time Lords procreate.  Not exactly a topic of canon, but one of interest none the less.

There's also a great deal of rabbit chasing, so get out your carrots and come with us.  Not to worry, we keep it clean.

Episode 165: Cybermen Revisited

It's been a more than a year (maybe more than two) since we've talked about the Cybermen.  There've been changes and new things to learn about them since we last examined them.  And, gosh darn it, we just saw them at the end of Series 8 and we want to talk about them again!  So there!

Episode 161: Siege Mode and Other Newness

This past Series 8 saw a lot of changes.  Some of which were to the TARDIS herself.  This week we're taking a look at those changes.  There are only three (we thought there had been a lot more) but they are very cool additions to the already complicated ship and home of our beloved Doctor.

Episode 159: Ooh, Look a Gadget!

Now that Series 8 is over we can take a sane (ha!) look back at all the nifty new tech that the lovely writers have given to us.  From neyphyte circuits to hyperspace ribbons, from a Skovox blitzer to the Gallifreyan hard drive, we're touching on it all.  Just an overview this time, plenty of shows next year to go into detail on how we think it all works.

If you have an idea about how any of this stuff works, please drop us a line!  We'd love to include your input when we discuss each gadget in detail on it's own episode next year.
